Round one of the WPL got under way this weekend with with all four matches held at the Events Worldwide State Football Centre at Darebin. The last match of the WPL Gala Day had Casey Comets taking on Preston Lions in an extremely fast-paced game played under lights.
It was a hard fought match throughout, with numerous challenges, and one on one battles, but it was the Comets who ultimately struck the killer blow, with Nicola Prins scoring a goal in the 38th minute from a free kick.
Preston definitely had their chances, and Casey Comets were denied what looked to be a clear penalty in the box which could have given the Comets a more convincing victory with a second goal. The match was not one for the faint hearted, and was a very physical battle with Casey coming out on top, winning one goal to nil and securing third place on the ladder at the end of Round One.
In Round Two, a BYE for Casey Comets.
