Comets Bounce Back
Casey Comets 4 v Eastern Lions 3
After last week's home loss, the Casey Comets bounced back with a fine win against Eastern Lions at Waverley last Saturday. With Liam Ryan returning to the club and John McEvoy back in for his first run in the Seniors, it was a confident Casey team that took to the field.
The Comets have not won a game at Eastern Lions for a few seasons and got off to a bad start when in the first 5 minutes Oran Harel was left unmarked in the box and his looping flick gave Ashley Hupe no chance. After this wake-up call, the Casey team took the game to the home team and could have scored on at least 4 occasions, but efforts from Tony Saunders and Farai (“Barnsy”) Murwira all struck the woodwork and bounced to safety.
The Comets drew level when a misplaced through ball from Tony Saunders deceived the Lions defender, and Nagus Henry pounced on to the loose ball and slotted it home to bring his goal tally to 6 for the season.
The second half proved to be a great spectacle for the crowd as 5 goals were scored.
Taking the game to the home team, the Comets dominated the game with Saunders and John McEvoy prominent in the middle of the park. From a succession of corners, the home defence were under great pressure and Saunders latched on to a loose ball in the box and put it past the Lions keeper for his first of the season.
With 20 minutes to go the Comets scored a goal that should win goal of the season when, from a long cross field pass, “Barnsy” Murwira controlled the ball, pushed it through the defenders legs in the same motion and from 30 yard out, he buried it into the net.
After this the Comets thought the game was over and retreated into a defensive mood and were punished severely as the Lions scored a fine goal when Andrew Smith latched on to a cross and his bullet-like header went past Hupe. The home team had the scent of goal and with 5 minutes left they were awarded a penalty and Harel stepped up to make the scores level.
The Comets were in danger of throwing the game away and were furiously defending their goal when with almost the last move of the game, Dom Branca found David Terek in the middle of the park and from his forward pass, McEvoy stepped over the ball to allow Liam Ryan to have a clear run into the box and he buried it past the home keeper for a dramatic win.
The Ressies had a fine away win and moved into third spot. Rajiu Khana got the vital goal and needed treatment as the home keeper collected him in his follow though.
Luke Presti was dominant in midfield and Blake Hicks shone at the back with Nic Grant impressive in goals with his confident style of play.
Next week sees the Comets at home to Dandenong City who have had a good start to the season and are one of the favourites to go up to Divvy 1.
