Elmazovski wins it for Casey Comets

Casey Comets 3 v Berwick City 2

The Casey Comets won the local derby against Berwick City at the Comets Stadium on Saturday thanks to a brace from young gun Brendan Elmazovski.

The game proved to be an excellent encounter with the visitors matching the home team and belying their second bottom spot in the league.

uteThe match really only came to life in the 20th minute when, from a wayward shot from Comets Captain Tony Saunders, it deflected into Elmazovski’s path and he ran on into the box and slotted it past Berwick's keeper Bobby Pejo for his first in the senior ranks.

It was end-to-end stuff with the visitors gaining ground, but Leigh Wilkinson and John McEvoy were outstanding in the middle of the park. Pejo was lucky not to be sent off when he raced out of his box and felled David Terek. From the resultant free kick, Saunders curled it around the wall to put the home team 2-0 up.

If the Comets thought they had it too easy, the City boys struck back and inside 2 minutes they had pulled one back, when Adam Ewin popped up unmarked in the six-yard box and belted it past Ashley Hupe. The home team were glad to see the half-time break as the City team had them penned in their own half.

Straight from the restart the Comets increased their lead when McEoy won the ball from a great tackle and pushed it to Elmazvoski who lobbed it over Pejo and into the empty net.

Again the visitors showed some grit and within 10 minutes they had reduced the deficit when Ewin got his second of the day after some slack defensive work by the Comets defence. From here until the final whistle it was end-to-end stuff and the crowd were getting full value for their money.

The Comets were awarded a penalty when Liam Ryan was tackled from behind in the box. Ryan got up and chose to take it himself but Pejo made a great stop low to his left to keep the visitors hopes alive.

With time running out, David Terek was red-carded and the home team had to play the last few minutes reduced to 10 men. The Comets won in the end but the visiting team showed that they could match it with anyone in the league and Comets President Charlie Branca wished the Berwick team the best of luck in their quest to get away from the bottom of the league.

The ressies lost 1-2 in a good game that saw the visitors take an early lead through Loui Rallis. Michael Tut made the scores level just before half-time.

The second half was fairly even but a fine strike by Craig Johnson gave the Berwick team full points and a deserved win. Reserve Coach Steve Marley was pleased with the result and getting 2 wins in a row is a good boost for his young charges.

Next Saturday sees the Comets at home again to Morwell who are travelling well in third spot. The Comets moved into fourth spot so a fine game is ensured as ex-Cranny coach Dale White brings his team to the Comets Stadium.
