Another great Comets Win!
The Casey Comets enthralled their travelling supporters with an entertaining away win against Knox City last Saturday. Blake Hicks started this week as he showed in last weeks win he could handle playing Senior football. Jarryd Barnes lined up in defence as he had a fine game last week in that position, rather than his attacking wide right spot.
In the first half, the Comets were against the howling wind and the Knox forwards were looking dangerous. Around the 10 minute mark Julius Adeosun broke through, and only a fine blocking save from Ashley Hupe who dashed off his line saved the day.
Shortly after, the Comets took the lead when, from a Farai”Barnsy” Murliria corner, a header from Comets captain Tony Saunders deflected off Paul Presti's backside and with referee Alf Nolatso waving play on despite Saunders appeal for a goal, it was the linesman who after consultation with Nalatso indicated that the ball had crossed the line.
Despite the conditions, it was the Comets who took the game to the home team and they were soon 2-0 up when Leigh Wilkinson flicked it over Knox keeper Mark Jorgenson from a well directed Brendan Elmazovski free kick.
The home team rallied and just before half-time they were rewarded with a fine goal from Phil Ajad which took a slight deflection on the way past Hupe.
With the wind the Comets were confident and were putting pressure on the Knox defence, but their third goal had an element of luck as from a long throw from Jarryd Barnes in the Knox goal, keeper Jorgenson seemed to palm it into his own net but Referee Nalatso gave the goal to Wilkinson who claimed he got his head to it.
Knox pulled another goal back when Adeosun latched on to a long crossfield ball and from just inside the box he slotted it past Hupe.
At this point Comets Coaches Doug Chisholm & George Hughes decided that attack was the only way to win and they brought on James Coburn and Gerard Lawler with 20 minutes left. With fresh legs on the park it proved to be the right choice as almost from his coming on, Coburn was steaming into the box and only a great tackle from Matt Wilson prevented a goal.
With less than 7 minutes left, the Comets wrapped up full points when from a goalbound Elmazovski shot, he pounced on the rebound after Knox keeper Jorgenson had produced a great blocking save.
Shortly after this, Presti was denied his hat-trick when Referee Nalatso disallowed a fine headed goal for a holding foul on Jorgensen.
Best on the day for the Comets was hard to pick, but Adam Venieri had a sound game at the back and quietly went about his business and mopped up attack after attack.
The Ressies lost to top of the table Knox City 3-0 in a game that saw long time favourite Joey Bucello have a run. Bucello has had a few set backs in the last couple of seasons with bad injuries but despite this, his aim is to get back in the senior team.
Next week sees the Comets home to Southern Suburbs who with a new Coach have a bit of a revival going. So a fine battle is expected at the Comets Stadium.
