What a comeback!

The Casey Comets came back from 2-0 down to notch up another win away to the Pines last Saturday in a game that kept the travelling support on the edge. With all the drama that has happened with the Pines and with new Coach Jimmy McMinimee running things, it was always going to be a tough game as players are ready to impress.

The start proved to be spot on as the Comets took control early with Paul Presti starting up front alongside Henry Nagus and Captain Tony Saunders in the middle of the park. David Terek was having a great game and winning everything in on the left side of the Comets defence. The chances went abegging as wave after wave of attacking football was piled on the Pines defence, mainly down the right wing with Jarryd Barnes in good form, but it was the Pines who took the lead when Mathew Morris-Thomas got in on the right side of the box and his rasping drive beat Ashley Hupe at his near post.

It stayed that way until half-time and early in the second half the pines went 2-0 up when Thomas popped up again and, despite Hupe's great block, it bounced off Thomas and into the empty net. The celebration from the players was that big you thought the Pines had won the world cup.

Coach Dougie Chisholm made changes and sacrificed defender Dominic Branca and brought on forward Blake Hicks for his first senior game. Soon after, the Comets pulled one back when Elmazovski released Farai Murwira “Barnsy” down the right wing and his pinpoint cross found Nagus who rose above the Pines defence and headed it past Mark Blanko in the Pines goals.

Hicks was starting to influence the game as he took on the Pines defence and took the pressure off the rest of the Comets forwards. From one of his runs his cross found Presti and, in one sweet move, he sidestepped his marker and slotted it past Blanko.

The Comets had the Pines on the back foot as the euphoria of a two goal lead was a distant memory and, with time running out, Captain Tony Saunders sealed an unlikely win as he got his head to a Terek corner and from an acute angle, he nodded it into the net.

The Comets won and the young Pines learned a valuable lesson.

The Ressies had a good 4-1 win and looked exceptionally good as they tore the really young Pines apart, and still should have had a lot more goals.

Next week sees the Comets away again to Knox City who are travelling quite well and just behind the Comets in 5th spot.
